RADIANT SAINTS
Using ultraviolet radiation, restorer
Tina Naumovic of the Bavarian Autho-
rity for the Preservation of Historic
Monuments in Munich, Germany,
examines two wooden statues from
the altar of St. Quirin monastery and
notices a fluorescent non-original
binder coat. The life-size silver-plated
bust of St. Benedict by Johann
Baptist Straub, at left, and the much
smaller St. Placidus are dated to the
mid-18th century.
