PHONY BEAD
Lapis lazuli was rare and expensive,
therefore the blue semi-precious
stone was often replaced with dyed
calcite. The colouring of this gold-
capped stone bead from chamber 1
of the royal tomb has long faded,
but the gold caps are adorned with
a pattern of tiny gold granules of
0.5 mm each.
