PIPES AND PUMPS
at a waterworks in Berlin
Friedrichshagen. The pumps
to the right are used for rinsing
and cleaning sand filters.
The ones to the left were built
when the German Democratic
Republic still existed, but
never put into operation.

>> This is a double exposure
with different filtering for
the room light and the light-
painting, which was done with
a flashlight by my assistant
Astrid. Typically, waterworks
operate almost completely
automated, therefore these
facilities are mostly devoid of
any human activity, especially
at night. Nevertheless I wanted
to somehow animate the scene,
so I had Astrid walk along the
passage between the pumps
with the torch and trace a bright
line in the air, as if a technician
were doing his round.
