‘BUCHBRUNNEN’ SPRING
near Dischingen in Germany’s
Swabian Mountains. A concrete
dome protects a natural karst
spring buffered by an extensive
water protection zone. Since a
high water in 1988, the well
is populated by tiny freshwater
crustaceans which indicate
excellent water quality.
The water is treated in the
adjoining waterworks.

>> This was my favourite shoot
of the assignment. The acoustics
inside the dome were beautiful.
Every little sound reverberated
for many seconds in a way that
allowed you to do wonderful
sound effects with your voice
alone. My assistant and I were
completely enchanted and
happily sang and hummed away
during the whole four hours of
the shooting. Time and again we
even circled the basin singing.
And for each exposure, the poor
manager in the doorway had to
hold still for several minutes.
