COLD STORAGE
In a cold storage room at the
GEOMAR Research Center for
Marine Geosciences in Kiel,
Germany, sedimentologist
Gerhard Bohrmann holds a
striated lump of methane
hydrate from Hydrate Ridge in
his hands. The samples are
kept in tanks of liquid nitrogen
at –196°C for further analysis.
The dark stripes are layers
of sediment.
