CUTTING THROUGH THE LAND
Thirty meters wide and 440 km long:
Germany’s biggest archaeological
excavation follows the construction of
the Northern European natural gas
pipeline NEL. After the topsoil has
been removed in a field near Syke
south of Bremen, discolorations are
marked and excavated. They may
indicate human dwellings, fireplaces,
post holes, or fills. Nearby, a hoard of
gold from the Bronze Age was found,
the Gessel Hoard.
