German mountain range Asse
was formed by a rising salt dome.
A former salt mine delved into
the dome was used for research
on nuclear waste disposal by the
GSF Research Centre.
Due to Germany’s decision to
discontinue the use of nuclear
energy, the mine must be
completely filled in, sealed and
secured by 2013.
